try to change your shocks by yourself using only a side stand and your bare hands...
it hurts. trust me.

clarification - I was going to a longer length shock...couldn't stretch it with one side on...ended up having to pull both sides and pick up the rear end bare handed...

OK ... but 2 of the bikes are Bonnies and I was installing Thrux length shocks on them. I didnt say it was easy ... but I didnt 'ouch' myself and there was some Redneck engineering involved.

I went to the Thrux-length shocks on my Bonnie, but I don't remember now how I did it exactly. I think I jacked the rear end up until it was just barely supported, then removed the old shocks and jacked the rear end up a little higher to fit the new ones.

I don't have a bike lift though, so my rear-wheel/shock-removal method consists of parking the bike between two fence posts, tying it upright at the front end, then putting a scissor jack with 2x4 across the frame, just behind the engine. It's not elegant, but it works, as proven by two rear tire changes and a rear shock change.

so I've got a nice black thumb, a strained elbow, and sore fingers...

A lift was the best thing I got... Even just the cheap pep boys one. It works...

Here's a tip... If you are ever going to remove the front end for anything, even just the wheel, jack the bike up then stick something under the rear tire like a block of wood or a foot stool. When that front end gets light, it loves to lean back,...

buy a bike jack! It's the best money you can spend on a tool for your bike. I got mine at Sears for $70, I think pep boys and harbor freight carry them as well. They are the shit.
