They have sandwiches, salads and pizza but are most famous for........you ready.........their cannolis. The pastry is great. My favorites are the triple chocolate or chocolate tiramisu. This one also has been on the Phantom Gourmet. Daughter also happens to work there.

The Blue Benn has great food, the waitresses are appropriately sarcastic, and the interior is very intimate, as a good retro diner should be. Bathrooms are like telephone boothes, so some of you guys should feel right at home. My only complaint is the same I have for every restaurant and diner in the world: the free refills on coffee. You see, I hate coffee, and always drink hot chocolate. Do I get free refills? Hell no, even though coffee is a hell of a lot more expensive than hot chocolate. My riding buddies, coffee drinkers all, have about ten free refills just to rub my nose in it, as I sit and contemplate my empty cup. Even the damn waitresses deliver my hot chocolate like I'm the "special" kid in class, complete with that knowing, sad little smile.
Just to get even, if I'm leading the group, I won't stop for a piss break until my own bladder is about bursting, smug in the knowledge that every bump in the last 50 miles has been pure torture to those pricks behind me.

Why not just man up and learn how to drink coffee and quit your whining.

My favorite place to eat in Birmingham is El Cazador on Thursday nights.

Pitchers of Dos Equis for $4.95 fajitas for $7.95. Robin and I get out of there for about $25.00.

Don't forget the Bennington Pizza House. That's where the pizza came from for the Friday night party at the first bash.

Madison's and the Rattlesnake(Mexican) are also very good.

as a former coffee shop owner, coffee is much much cheaper than hot chocolate...
unless you're doing generic swiss miss type add water mix. if you're actually making hot chocolate, with milk and chocolate, the cost is 3-4x coffee, depending on the chocolate that you use and the fat content of your dairy product.

In the diners I have frequented, it has always been the packaged stuff that you add to hot water, as they often bring me the envelope to make it myself. I have never been in a diner where they actually made it with milk and chocolate; did you really do that in your coffee shop? If so, I'm sorry I missed it!
My father was an avid coffee drinker, and my mother's complaining about the expense of the many pounds of coffee led me to believe that it was much more expensive than hot chocolate. (We used Nestle's Quik and milk at home).
In any case, thanks for informing me of the reality of the hot drinks market, as I always like to learn something that I didn't know. It's funny, but as I get older, this list seems to grow larger and not smaller as would seem logical!

PS - Just so everyone knows, my original post was meant to be read as comic relief and not literally, but I guess my effort failed miserably. Oh well, the next time you're at a diner, ask the waitress to give you a free refill of coffee on me.
