New and improved Adirondacks Ride

As my Adirondacks Ride buddies know, I keep revising the route of this ride every year, and I've done so again. This time we'll be spending much more of the ride in the Adirondacks themselves, including getting much deeper into some of the remoter areas, with some nice twisty roads (yes, including the one you'll remember from last year) and fantastic mountain views.

This new route goes right through my boyhood hometown of North Creek NY, and the roads are great there. The winter wasn't kind to all of the roads, so you will encounter some rough sections on the route, but the views will more than make up for it. If you have the time, you may want to ride up and see the old titanium mine at Tahawus, or take the left and go to the ghost town of Adirondac. I have included a picture of the old blast furnace which is on that road. The ride from 28N back to North Hudson is one of my favorite rides, and be sure and slow down and check out the herd of buffalo that are being raised just before you get back to 87. Quite a sight!
My buddy and I did some riding in Vermont this past Sunday, and we discovered some new roads that are absolutely spectacular for motorcycles. These could be incorporated into several of the rides such as the Mt. Equinox, and the additional mileage wouldn't be excessive. Here's the directions coming from the south:
North on Rt. 100 into Weston (The Vermont Country Store is cool if you haven't been there), then left onto Rt 155 to 140 west which goes to Wallingford. Then south on Rt. 7 to N. Main Street, then right onto Brook Road. Great canyon like twisties on this one! Stay on Brook Road into Danby Four Corners, then left onto Danby Pawlett Rd. The views here are just beautiful. Then right onto 30 north, which takes you to 149 west into Granville NY, and here you can come down 22 into Salem, and then lots of choices to get you back to either Manchester or Cambridge to Bennington.

Great pic and write up about the roads...My parents are from Lowville (Tug Hill area)...I was wondering if the snow banks had melted up there yet?...guess not according to the pic

Yep, that's part of the plan if we have time. The road up to Adirondac is a lot of fun too.

You missed the best part of Rt 140 -- next time continue to East Wallingford.

Lowville! more cows than people there

Sure are...our family and relatives were dairy farmers in Lowville...The Gilletes still farm in Turin..not the easiest thing to do in that area of the world...

Hey mark,

From your route I agree skipping Lake George proper. Americade is starting that following Monday and I am sure the NY Staties will be gearing up. I used to run a large ride there every year until it turned into a zoo. Heard last year they NYSP set up exhaust check points to even get into town. I am sure there will bike traffice heading into town as it's the weekend prior if the weather is good.

Two years ago, they were checking sound levels at the 87 rest area just north of the Hudson in the northbound lane. Last year, a bunch of folks went up Rt. 9 to avoid this, but the police had already anticipated this, and they had a sound check set up there as well.

Happen to remember when those checkpoints were in place? I'm hoping we're early enough that they won't be set up yet. Americade doesn't actually begin till Monday the 7th, and I've never seen too many people rolling in the Saturday before, which is when we're having our ride. They mostly seem to show up on Sunday and Monday.

Maybe I'll try to route us around potential checkpoints, just in case.
