I thought this had Historical significance , since it was one of the decisive Battles in the Revolution. Would like to see it. Old Bennington. I'm sort of a self - made Historian , History fascinates me.

Speed,

I'm there with ya. My cup of tea is the civil war and wwII. I'm up for checking some revolutionary war sites.

ooooh hot button.

I'm a spit away (next creek over) from the Miller homestead...the shots that started the whiskey rebellion 1790s. poor dad intended to retire on a 107 acre farm in the sw BOONIES of Pa...had a 1780's log house we restored to a museum piece...and got interested in the 1754 white Virginians coming over the buffalo trail from Cumberland. Fort Necessity, Jumonville, French and Indian War all started here where I roam...also here is the Adena mounds date 2K years back.

40 Miles nw is Meadowcroft Rock Shelter...pre-dated the Clovis point by a couple thousand years...some speculate 19,000 years, but 13-15K for sure...glacier age.

I cornered the 80 yo guy who recognized the spot all along and brought the big guns in to do the archeology (which upset everything they thought they knew) and we had a 4 hour chat about everything...he was a gem. made me buy a book called "Notes on the Settlements" by Dodridge (I think) about the first white folks...I mean the first...the description of coming into a wilderness...no bees...bees were on the coast with the flowering plants...virgin forest canopy and mature forest floor...indians behind the trees, snakes underfoot, and cats in the branches ready to pounce...coming with holy men, Moravians I think to try to talk with the inhabitants. Indian raids...with no help in Pittsburg...amazing book.

and interesting stuff at Jamestown last couple of years too.

I like the early...before they fucked it all up.

Washington was thru...and Braddock and Forbes, they had a French fort at Pittsburg for a decade and a British fort active for 20 years...then everybody came thru to hit anything that was close to the Ohio.

I don't think we had any glamorous stand out heros here...everybody was a BMF.

That church and graveyard is like 100 yards up the road from the PAradise inn. The monument is around the corner. We can detour there at the end of the Equinox ride, or maybe hit it sunday morning if ya want. Plenty of time to get there since it's so close!

Thanks for sharing that Speed.

A little OT, but an inspiration to getting that last mile done:

The boys left Bennington's Catamount Inn, and paid a little visit to Fort Ticonderoga, where they "borrowed" a few cannons from the British.
After taking Fort Ticonderoga, ** 59 cannon are dragged by oxen 300 miles ** to help with the siege of Boston.

The guns weighed up to a ton each.

42 sleds full of lead and bullets are also transported.

The guy who does the transporting is Henry Knox (namesake of later Fort Knox)

So that's two months of Winter camping, over hill and dale, arriving at Boston in January

I don't think the Mass Pike was up and running then, If it was, bet they didn't have EZ passes.

sounds good, There are so many rides that I want to go now that I need to make a list of them all. Then set down and plan which ones I'm going on.

Hey Robin, what are some other covered bridges you know? My ride is going thru the East Arlington one, then there's the West arlington one, but that one is more of a drive by... I think there's one over bear Brattleboro too.

i preformed a wedding in the west arlington covered bridge 3 weeks ago. man was it cold!!!
there are 3 in north bennington within 2 miles of each other. then you can shoot over to the battlefield in waloomsac ny (3ish miles from the last bridge). i was volunteering at the benn museum last nite and got a BIG history lesson on flags from the director. the oldest stars & stripes flag is at the smithsonian. it is the only one that has 15 stars and 15 stripes. vermont and kentucky had stripes, but after the louisana purchase they got removed from the flag and stuck to just adding stars. the museum has one of the largest american flag collections. i'm adding it to the "touristy trip". maybe i can get steve to give a discount on admission and a flag Q & A.
