A question for Tito and other long distance riders

Have questions about the event or the area? Want to plan a ride in with others who are coming? Here's the place for it.

As one who has been doing cross country trips periodically since '78, my take is that the cost is variable depending on where you are. I usually camp for two days and motel for one. Once you are out of the northeast, rates for motels can be pretty reasonable. There's a lot of research to be done if you want to get a close estimate. I use a Microsoft Map program to find camping and motel sites. You can call them and get rates.

Relax, Tito!

It's not like Mark and I are going to perform Gregorian Chants outside your hotel room every night!

Like Mark, my spare change has been going into the bike and gear for the trip. And like all married guys, I have a wife not a paycheck.

Each of us will have the time of our lives in our own way. We're all pretty laid back and determined to have fun!

I am relaxed!

I am relaxed!

Got my passport, new front tire, fresh synthetic oil, fender extender.

Lots oh places to eat, lots of things to do and see, music, lots of campgrounds and hotels along the way.

Too bad I can't take the Speed Triple, I would love to WHEELIE on the Cabot Trail! :-)

Yeah, I was thinking that it's too bad I can't take the Bonneville.

I'd actually love to do a slower-paced tour sometime on the Bonneville. Keep the daily mileage around 250 (because more than 300 on that bike is exhausting), take a lot of breaks, and stick to back roads. I'd probably put slightly more upright bars on the Bonnie, but no windshield or anything. Just do it totally old-school.

Maybe we should plan an old-school tour sometime -- you ride your BMW, I'll ride my Bonnie.

(Call me crazy, but part of me would actually love to get a Royal Enfield 500 single and ride it cross-country... if I had three months to spare!)

And, speaking of long rides....after the Bennington gathering, Vicki and I will get back to CT on Sun. The next day I have to jump on the Ducati and try to catch up to three of my buds who will be somewhere in TN or KY. I'm hoping a couple of 500-600 mi. days will do it.

Rides

Mark!

I did ride my old 74 BMW to Sturgis in 2000, I have ridden many 800plus mile days on it. Great bike.

How did you do that?

I honestly don't know if I could manage an 800-mile day on a freaking Goldwing. I'd even have trouble with one in the car. Doing it on a classic naked standard boggles my mind.

I bow to your endurance!

I've re-thought the two 500 mi. days to catch my friends. To celebrate my 62nd birthday I'm going to give a shot at a 1,000 mi. day on the 998. I haven't done that since '78. What the hell you go around once as far as I can tell. :)

Bruce!

Can you get your IRON BUTT certificate if you document it?

I don't know. I was unaware that they did that. I'm just hoping the planets align and I actually can do it. It's been a while and it's not exactly my Sprint, if you know what I mean.

Here's a link to the Iron Butt site. http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/ They even have some paperwork to print at the bottom of the page for the 1000 mile ride. A good book on the subject of long distance riding is "Going The Extra Mile" by Ron Ayres. It's something I'd like to attempt as well.

I'm going to give myself a monkey-butt certificate after I arrive From Seattle. No pictures please - not a pretty sight!

I think we should all autograph an empty bottle of BBC Steel Rail for you. A souvenir you can take home. I will do my part by emptying it for you.

Thanks for drink offers, full or empty! :) I'm heading out on Saturday the 16th. I've never been through the northern states, and I plan to stay off I-90 as much as I can, and see as much as I can.

After Bennington I've got 4 more weeks to get back to Seattle. It's going to fun, a chance to empty my head, and an opportunity to see how bad gear can smell after 6 weeks!

And Tito, thank you. I will stay focussed. If I get too complacent or distracted by fatigue, cold or back pain or something, I'll stop and enjoy the silence.

See you in Bennington!

P.S.: Speaking of long-distance traveling, Rat.net's Tbiller, from Nottingham, England, said that he was coming back in October. Never heard more about it from him, though.
