Mellow's Ride Report

Postby mistermellow001 » Mon May 19, 2008 1:01 am

I decided to leave on Sunday morning instead of Saturday. Many reasons. So, got off to a bad start with this little mishap. My Vario screen snapped right off my bike less than 5 miles from my house, at 4:00 a.m...

Image

It also knocked one of the vents off the top of my Arai. I'd show you a picture, but it just looks like a hole in the top of my helmet. I also developed a gas leak at the throttle shaft. There's no way I'm fixing that. It's just a seep.

After messing with those things for hours, I finally got under way, pushing wind (as in no screen). I'm trying to decide if I want to push wind twice across the U.S. It wasn't so bad with my tank bag stuffed full. Here's a picture of my Bonnie at Steven Pass. My preferred Cascade Mountains pass is the North Cascades Highway, but it was closed due to avalanche hazard. This one's slightly lower. Gerbing gloves and vest came in handy...

Image

On the east side of the mountains it heated up fast. Makes me wonder if I'll need my heated clothing again. Probably will need it going over the Continental Divide on my way to Yellowstone. I read today that Black Bears like to eat people, as opposed to Brown Bears merely crunching your head as a warning. :) I'm hoping that because I smell like gasoline, they'll not have an appetite for anything in my campsite.

Here are two pictures to illustrate the geographical diversity in the State of Washington. One day from water, to snow, to grasslands, to desert....

Image

This formation is part of the Channelled Scablands of Washington. An ancient dam formed by a receding glacier broke and scoured out 1/3 of the entire state. This is one of the channels. All this cut in less than a week (I'm going on memory here, so my facts might be off a little)...

I'm in a motel in Spokane tonight. I was so tired from my morning ordeal that I forgot it was Sunday and went in search of a Triumph dealership. I forgot it was closed on Sunday and Monday. As I was heading back to the highway, to head for Idaho, I made a left turn without shoulder checking. A woman in an SUV nearly t-boned me. She had to run up on the curb to get around me, and I stopped so fast I dropped the bike. 500 lbs, at least, and I was so upset I picked the thing up without trying to get help. I figured it was time to call it a day. All in all, only 240 miles, and it took me 12 hours from door to door. Tomorrow I'll be rested and smarter. I had a good time, though. Sounds like I didn't, but I rode with and talked to lots of other bike touring types. I'll post another report as soon as I'm able...

Guy,
Wow, not a great way to start your day! Lucky that broken windshield didn't hit you lower. I'm thinking "throat"!
I can't believe you have the energy to post pictures and give us a write up. Stay safe. And I'll totally understand if this is a one way trip. I've been told by my daughter that "if" I make it to L.A., I probably won't want to hop back on the bike and ride back east. She keeps telling me it's a lot bigger country than I imagine.
Once again Guy, ride safe and thanks for posting.

Yes, in the throat would have been painful, or as my brother likes to say, embarrassing. :)

I was mistaken about riding 240 miles yesterday. It was 334 miles (Mount Vernon to Spokane). I have no idea how I came up with 240.

More later...

On the road finally! What a treat for a geology nut to be in the high West aird land where vegetation doesn't obscure the ancient past. Best of luck to you.

Hey Guy,
If it's not too much trouble, when you post next could you mention some of your routes so we can follow along on Google Earth.

If this is a pain, not to worry. We'll enjoy whatever tidbits you can throw our way. As always, ride safe.

PS How does it feel to be the first Bennington Bash rider on the road? Seeing your example, no one has any "riding" excuses now for missing this event!

The Route To Butte

Postby mistermellow001 » Tue May 20, 2008 2:07 am

Today I wandered around Spokane until about 11:30 a.m. A very nice river-front area there. After that I added another 315 miles to the trip, landing at Butte MT. Here's the route so far...

Image

I hate to say this, but unless you're going to explore more of Idaho and Montana, the I-90 corridor is sameness all the way. Therefore, I didn't take many pictures, but I stopped here and there to look around. Here's where I stopped for lunch, the historic mining town of Wallace, Idaho...

After that, more of the same. The interesting thing about the trip from about Wenatchee, Washington, to Missoula, Montana was strong cross-winds. I was fighting them like crazy. It was like a free trip to the amusement park (Okay, not free; $3.57 to $4.25/gallon). Between Missoula and Butte, the winds calmed down to nothing, and my speed picked up. I was cutting through the air at between 75 and 90 mph. It's unusual for me to go that fast, but the roads were good, very few cars, and a stable motorcycle. I had to slow down a few times where the road was ground for re-paving, or when passing a truck.

I'm starting to feel the excitement! Tomorrow I'll get into country I've never been before. After my first day of mishaps I was left kind of worn out. Today it was all about having a nearly empty I-90 to myself. Some stretches for miles with no one near me. I finally stopped to camp just outside of Butte, Montana (if you can call a Good Sam camping. Only $19.00, with showers, laundry, an all-night sitting area, books, videos and games. Tomorrow will be a short day, as I plan to camp at Yellowstone. I wanted to be there at the end of Day 2, but I goofed around in Spokane too long. 630-something miles so far (out of 3,000), with 10 days to go. I'm doing fine on time. Here's a couple of pics from my campground...

Great Pics!

Postby TonUp » Tue May 20, 2008 6:44 am

Guy!

You should be able to do a pretty nice write up of your ride and send it to various forums, clubs, newspapers, magazines.

It is great for others to see and share what a great adventure it is to ride a motorcycle across this beautiful country.

Keep smiling and enjoy your Great Adventure!

Guy,
Everything looks fantastic. You seem to be in the right grove now. As you said in an earlier post, you'll "lord over me" with your new riding knowledge when we set out from Bennington. I can't wait to learn from the new master.
One question, how did you find the campground? Do you have a list or are there signs fairly well posted?
Stay safe and keep the reports and photos coming. I hope you are starting to feel emotionally free and leave your job behind!

PS I sent the http address to my daughter so she can follow along. Be civil guys. (Did I just open a can of worms by saying that?)

I can hardly wait to get on the road. Nice pics and report. I am already envious of your ride and your only on day two. Robin and I are going to have to do the cross country thing soon. Maybe next year. Can we stay at your place for a night or two?

I love them! They are everything I could have ever asked for in comfort. There is a little foot dragging every now and then in corners but nothing alarming.
