Planning a trip to Death Valley

Postby bruce19 » Tue Jan 06, 2009 10:01 am

My friend Mike (R1150GS) and I are planning a trip to Death Valley for Spring '09. I'll probably end up going on my FZ1. But, I'd love to take the 998. And, if I hadn't crashed it, my Sprint would have been perfect for the job. Although I've made the cross country trip several times, I've never been to Death Valley. Anyone been there and have any advice?

BTW, Is there a date for BTB? I'd like to avoid a conflict with my trip to Death Valley. At this point I'm sure I can schedule around the BTB event.

Been there, drove thru there, left there...........have air conditioning installed on the bikes. no amount of mesh will keep you cool while riding. The air is hot, the temp is hot, the wind is hot...atleast when I was there many years ago.

Bruce, have never used one but am planning on having a cooling vest for this year. Might be a good idea. That and plenty of water as if you won't think of it as you get closer. I remember when I drove my van out to Arizona I just could'nt get over how damn hot it was. Spent a year out there and I don't think I've drunk as much water since. That might be cause I've been drinking beer but even so it's so freakin hot out there I can't imagine going back unless it's between November and March. Actually, if I was retired like you I'd be all over a trip like that. Time has a way of almost making me forget how I not only pissed on the sign that read Welcome to Phoenix Arizona but I shot it with a small caliber 22 when I was leaving. Actually, the desert can be a very beautiful place but I'd pack some sincere sun screen. Like a number 500. If there is anything I do miss from being out there it would be the sunset. Never seen anything like it since. Wish I had the time to tag along. Stay cool, Todd

Bruce have a blast take pictures and drink plenty of fluids. Remember its a dry heat LOL. I would love to do it just to say I rode a bike threw the Death Valley. I have to do the Meme event I am hoping to hook up with someone from here for the ride up and my ass is already feeling the pain so my hats off to ya if your leaving your crib and making the trip. Thats a iron butt and nut ride there my friend . I want to ride down and see Randy when I go to Daytona just to give me a break from my ass burn to Florida.

I plan on going to the MEME but will ride up [camp in NH again on the way up and back]. I suppose you will truck up there Jimmy?

Alrighty! I camped at Greenfield State Park in NH and then I crashed at the plush hotel at the MEME. There is a private campground a few miles from the resort.
I meandered on secondary roads there and back. Took longer, of course, but I could not have seen all I did otherwise. Man, the MEME is worth it for the trip alone. That'd be great if you go!

Jimmy, that weekend smacks me hard on the responsibility front; thats why I would likely only be able to ride up and back in the same day. Can definetly put you up here if you want to break up the trip and it would only make a small difference in the direction you'd be going in. Plenty of room and your bike can hang out with the other ones in the basement.

Oh, speaking of Scorpions; it took me years to stop lifting my shoes and knocking them out before I'd put them on. Now I just give um a liitle shakin. As anyone who's spent time out in the desert knows those little pests along with spiders "think Black Widow' and snakes 'think rattle' like to make their home in your shoes while your not in them. And they do it even if your in a house or hotel room or just dipping your feet in the creek to cool off. That's if ya can find a creek. Yeah, and if ya think June bugs up here can make a picturesque statement on ya; they got ones out there can make ya mug look like the sole target in paintball match. Still, the riding in the evening through Canyons with a sunset so big even your perepheral vision can't see it all is well worth an occasional run-in with the local vermin.
Bruce, have you set a date to go?
